Freedom to Be Quilt Decorating Night

January 20 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Weather Notice: This event has been moved from Jan. 7 to Jan. 20 at the Lewes Public Library due to the snow.

“Freedom to Be” is an ACLU-led initiative that aims to center the voices and experiences of trans people in America.  The ACLU is constructing a monument on the National Mall made up of individual quilt panels created by trans people and allies who fight alongside the trans community today.

That’s where you come in!  Join Sussex Pride and CAMP Rehoboth at the Lewes Public Library and help create a panel for the quilt.  You will create a smaller square that will be added to other squares from Delaware to make up a six foot by six foot panel.

Be as creative as you would like in creating your square, using imagery, symbols, pictures, or words to share your feelings about freedom, about being trans, about gender-affirming medical care, or about the trans people you’ve known, loved, or lost. It can be a tribute to a trans icon from history, a friend you’ve lost, or even yourself. It can be a love letter to your body, or a story about your own pursuit of happiness.

The panel will be displayed on the National Mall this spring, and digitally archived for future generations!  Your contribution can be anonymous or your name can be included, when you sign a permission slip.  Young people 13-18 who want to have their name included will need their parents to fill out and sign the ACLU Freedom to Be Consent Form.
