And We’re Off!
The summer season is upon us, so let’s hope June busts out in a hot flash soon! Enjoy dinner downtown, stroll the galleries, see a show or film screening and partake of the bounty of arts in the area. All locations are Rehoboth Beach, unless otherwise noted.
PERFORMING ARTS
Clear Space Theatre Company (20 Baltimore Avenue; 302-227-2270) the regions only professional theatre company, announces their Summer Repertory Season: Jerry Herman’s La Cage Aux Folles starring Christopher Peterson—opening June 27; the family classic The Sound of Music—opening July 1; and the world premiere of Radio Gaga—opening July 15. All three shows run Monday-Saturday in two-day rotation through Labor Day. Christopher Peterson’s The Best of EYECONS plays Friday-Sunday nights in July and August after the main-stage shows. Possum Point Players (441 Old Laurel Road in Georgetown; 302-856-4560) announces Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None—June 14-23. Dinner/Show packages available.
Rehoboth Concert Band performs at Stango Park at the Lewes library on Tuesday, June 4 with Mahler to Gaga (7 p.m.) and at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand, Sunday, June 30 with Happy Holiday Week (8 p.m.). Featuring guest soloists: Donna deKuyper (vocalist, Clear Space Theater Company) and Dave Schiff (jazz saxophonist, retired Navy Band Commodores).

*Anita Peghini-Räber Gallery (49 Baltimore Avenue; 302-227-2888) Local naturalistic-expressionist U.S.-Swiss Painter, Anita Peghini-Räber presents Anita’s Easy Art Crit—bring in up to three unfinished paintings and they will energize you to finish them up! Fridays (3-5 p.m.) $15. Pre-registration required. End-of-Month Saturday Tango De Arte (9 p.m.-1 a.m.) $10. Free Beginner’s class in Argentine Tango (8-9 p.m.) Gallery is open every day.
Art for a Purpose (135 Second Street, second floor, in Lewes; 302-245-4528) is a one-of-a-kind art gallery run by Midge Smith which assists tax-exempt organizations by turning donated art into cash for their unrestricted use. Gallery hours Friday-Sunday.
Barking Dog Gallery (29 Lake Shore Drive; Lewes; 856-577-1411) offering classes in watercolor/zentangle and jewelry by Donna Whiteside. Raining Cats and Dogs: art show featuring eight regional artists working in various media, will exhibit through July at The Kitchen at Paynter’s Mill (Cave Neck Road in Milton). Artists included: Anne Buck, Anne Carroll, Linda Chatfield, Val Helgesen, Claire Ingley, Melissa McClean, Keith Steck, Donna Whiteside and Libby Zando. A percentage of arts sales will benefit the Georgetown SPCA.
*Gallery 50/G-50 Fine Art Photography (50 A-B Wilmington Avenue; 302- 227-2050) welcomes award-winning, master framer Ed McGann (formerly of Thunderbird Shop & Gallery) as manager. Come see Ed, their new look, and wonderful new works of art.
The Happyrock Pottery (20 Baltimore Avenue at the Celebration Mall; 410-375-7120) features the work of potter Susan Gladstone. Stop in and see what’s new in the gallery/studio. Susan might be throwing a pot or two!
*Heidi Lowe Gallery (328 Rehoboth Avenue; 302-227-9203) features handmade, contemporary jewelry by studio artists from around the world. Get a sneak peek of the Earrings Galore Exhibition before they take it to Toronto for the pop-up gallery at the international metal-smithing conference.
*Juleez (1 North First Street; 302-227-3792) features the unique and vibrant works of Julie Borden including hand-painted cellos, violins, miniature pianos, beautiful acrylic on canvas originals, and giclee prints. They also carry dichroic glass sculptures by Mary Ann Borden.
*Delaware Art Gallery (239 Rehoboth Avenue) features new and classic favorite Delaware photographs by Kevin Fleming and photography by Jay Fleming, Tony Pratt, and Pamela Bieler, as well as hand-blown glass by Deb Appleby.
*Paintiques and The Galleries at 20 Baltimore (20 Baltimore Avenue; 302-258-4203) celebrates Women In, Around, and About Art through May. Stop by and enjoy their femme de la Paris themed vignettes. Their next featured artist is Sybil Mackensie: June 8 (6-9 p.m).
Peninsula Gallery (520 E. Savannah Rd in Lewes; 302-645-0551) announces their June exhibition (June 1-25) To Georgia with Love, Works Inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe. Award-winning artists Kim Klabe, and Nick Serratore present original work in pastel and acrylic.
*Philip Morton Gallery (47 Baltimore Avenue; 302-727-0905) Fantastic works on display from Tara Funk Grim, Deborah Brisker Burk, Dane Tilghman, Aina Nergaard, Gary Fisher, Rob Vander Zee, Ronni Jolles, Boris Kramer, Gary Gowan, John Whitney, William Dunlop, Andres Tremols, J. Rehoboth Art League (12 Dodds Lane in Henlopen Acres; 302-227-8408) presents the first of the spring/summer exhibition season with Catherine Hillis’ Color and Light in the Tubbs Gallery and a Members Showcase: Shadow Boxing in the Historic Homestead. The Catherine Hillis exhibit will remain on view with paintings for sale through June 2. The Members Showcase continues through June 9. Rehoboth Beach Film Society (107 Truitt Avenue, 302-645-9095) Festival Film Reviews: Film Critics wanted to screen film submissions for upcoming Festival. Rehoboth Beach Museum (511 Rehoboth Avenue at the Canal, 302-227-7310) presents The Beach Eats— celebrating 100 years of eating in Rehoboth Beach. The exhibit features memorabilia from well-known Rehoboth restaurants.
SprouseART (1 North First Street; 302-542-3242) presents new works by artist Michael Sprouse from the Small Painterly Landscape & Seascape Series exclusively available in the SprouseART section of Juleez.
*Ward Ellinger Gallery (CAMP Rehoboth Courtyard, 39 Baltimore Avenue; 302-227-2710) features works of abstract expressionism in different mediums by Ward Ellinger and Sondra N. Arkin.
