Autumn Leaves
Actually, autumn leaves in December, but there are plenty of falling leaves to remind us that summer is on the way out. Luckily for us, the start of fall signals the start of a new season for the arts community! Lots of great events coming up, and you can’t use the excuse that it’s too busy on Route 1 to get anywhere. All locations are Rehoboth, unless otherwise noted.
PERFORMING ARTS
Bethany Area Repertory Theater (in residence at the Dickens Parlor Theater; 35715 Atlantic Avenue; Bethany Beach; 302-829-1071) opens their season with the comedy Hate Mail through September 26. If you like Love Letters you’ll love Hate Mail!
Clear Space Theatre Company (20 Baltimore Avenue; 302-227-2270) presents Terrance McNally’s dark comedy, Lips Together–Teeth Apart opening Friday, September 25, and continuing weekends through October 11. Mature content!
Coastal Concerts (in residence at Bethel UMC Hall; Fourth and Market Streets, Lewes; 888-212-6458; P.O. Box 685; Lewes, DE. 19958) is gearing up for their new season, which starts October 17 with Red Priest, a Baroque quartet from the UK like no other! Future concerts include the Danish String Quartet, the VIDA Guitar Quartet (also from the UK), pianist Michael Brown, and The Lincoln Trio.
Kent County Theatre Guild (140 E. Roosevelt Ave in Dover; 800-838-3006) opens their season with Tennessee Williams’ classic The Glass Menagerie, September 25-October 10. They also offer Wednesday evening classes in jazz and tap!
Ovation Dinner Theater (302-500-1528) presents interactive comedy and Murder Mystery Dinner Theaters in the area. Check their website for locations.
Possum Point Players (441 Old Laurel Road in Georgetown; 302-856-4560) is in rehearsals for their fall production of Hairspray, October 2-11. A light-hearted musical with a moral, and a great cast!
Premier Centre for the Arts at Milton Theater (110 Union St in Milton; 302-684-3038) presents Kindred Spirits, a husband/wife duo playing traditional folk, bluegrass, country, and Celtic music (September 25); Remembering Red, a tribute to Red Skelton performed by Brian Hoffman (October 2); and iComedy: A Night of Music Comedy featuring the very funny Todd Chappelle (October 3). Check out their fall class schedule with everything from Musical Theater to Acting to a wide variety of dance classes beginning September 8. Thursday, October 8, they are sponsoring a bus trip to Washington, D.C. for Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. $145/single or $270/couple.
Rehoboth Beach Film Society (107 Truitt Avenue, 302-645-9095) has a busy fall season! Around the World: (Co-sponsored with the Lewes Library) Amour Fou (Wednesday, October 7 at 7 p.m.). Admission is free. Read A Movie: (Co-sponsored with the Rehoboth Beach Library) The Time Machine (Wednesday, October 14-4 p.m.). $4 members/$6 future members. Monthly Screenings: ’71 (Friday, September 18 at 7 p.m.); Meet the Patels (Friday, October 23 at 7 p.m.). $4 members/$6 future members. All listed events held at MCC on Plantation Road.
Rehoboth Concert Band is jazzin’ it up for the True Blue Jazz Series—Saturday, October 17 (1 p.m.) at Rehoboth Beach Bandstand. Three jazz bands from 12-3 p.m, and it’s free!
Second Street Players (2 South Walnut Street in Milford; 302-422-0220) presents one of my favorite comedies: Noises Off!— through September 27. Auditions for A Christmas Story will be held Sunday, September 20 and Monday, September 21. Performances November 27-December 7. Second Street Players Children’s Theater offers The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe—October 16-18. For more information visit their website.

*Amandeline Gallery (Galleries at 20 Baltimore Avenue; 302-226-0330) displays new oil paintings by Sergey Cherep, and Elaine Hahn through August, as well as new Mermaid collages from local artist, Kelli Pavon, and new jewelry creations by Amanda Ponko. Their theme is Farmer’s Market so look for paintings of fruits, vegetables, and floral still-life.
*Anita Peghini-Räber Gallery (49 Baltimore Avenue; 302-227-2888) brings Luz. H. Arkal of Art Miami to the beach with Planetary Connections. Catch-a-Sketch by Anita is a fun-filled encounter, which leaves you with a colorful naturalistic/ expressionistic keepsake, by appointment. Saturdays/ Sundays Young at Art (9-10:15 a.m.) children (6-8 years old) join Anita on a tour of the changing exhibits of important contemporary, global artists, then create their own artwork. Donations help cover the cost of material. Weekly Creative Fusion Dance every Thursday (7-8 p.m.) with Viviana. Monthly Milonga, Tango de Arte (last Saturday of the month, 9 p.m. -1 a.m.), with a free introduction by Adam from Tango Lewes (7-8 p.m.).
*Delaware Art Gallery (239 Rehoboth Avenue; or kevinfleming.com) presents new and classic favorite Delaware photographs by Kevin Fleming, photography by Jay Fleming, Tony Pratt, and Pamela Bieler, and hand-blown glass by Deb Appleby. Visit their new gallery in Lewes!
*Gallery 50 and G-50 Fine Art Photography (50 A-B Wilmington Avenue; 302- 227-2050) Check the website for current exhibits—their Master framer, Ed McGann, is always happy to assist you with all of your framing needs.
The Happyrock Pottery (20 Baltimore Avenue at the Celebration Mall; 410-375-7120) features the work of potter Susan Gladstone. Take a step into the studio and watch Susan throwing pots all summer and perhaps into the fall!
Heidi Lowe Gallery (328 Rehoboth Avenue; 302-227-9203) offers day and nighttime classes in metal-smithing. Learn to make rings, earrings and bracelets! Always something to catch your eye or decorate another part of your body.

Rehoboth Art League (12 Dodds Lane in Henlopen Acres; 302-227-8408) will host three new exhibitions at their Henlopen Acres location in the Corkran and Tubbs Galleries—Past Perfect—works by Jeana Eve Klein, Members Showcase: Home is Where the Heart Is, and Members Showcase: Lost At Sea—through November 1. CURB (Courage Unmasked Rehoboth Beach) will present a Gala Art Benefit Auction at RAL, September 19 (6-8 p.m.). Tickets: $125 per person/$225 per couple and need to be purchased in advance. Recent Paintings by Carl Goldhagen at the RAL Art Studios on Route 9 through October 11.
Rehoboth Beach Museum (511 Rehoboth Avenue at the Canal, 302-227-7310) has a fantastic exhibit—Women of Rehoboth Beach—celebrating the great ladies of Rehoboth’s past: do-gooders, bootleggers, divorcees, business owners, and publishers of lesbian novels!
Scénique Art Gallery (7 North First Street, 302-226-2787) is a new fine art gallery specializing in seascapes and fun in the sun. Now on sale: Fall into Winter by Bruce Norman. Coming soon: Laurie Regan Chase, an award-winning artist and signature member of the American Society of Marine Artists. Open daily from noon-10 p.m.
*Ward Ellinger Gallery (CAMP Rehoboth Courtyard, 39 Baltimore Avenue; 302-227-2710) features Abstract expressionism by Ward Ellinger and Sondra N. Arkin.
